I wonder what the hundreds of thousands of "financially challenged" business web site owners, who would like to sell advertising on their sites, are thinking when they read about the millions of dollars being paid by advertisers to a dozen or so web sites. The reports could be depressing until you examine the numbers a little closer.
Fifty million people visiting an average of 20 sites a week each, equal 1 billion visits a week. If 13 major web sites receive an average of 7 1/2 million visitors each, per week, that leaves 90% of the entire week's activity…for the rest of us. We visit several hundred sites each week ourselves.
The rest of us may not be able to compete on the same playing field with the big-bucks guys and we may not want to. The financially challenged can get a better return on their investment by using the thousands of free and low cost advertising sites. Unlike most traditional forms of advertising that have been priced out of the market, the Internet is inexpensively waiting…for the rest of us.
Classified sites are available for as little as $50/year and display (banner) sites for $100/year. ISPs offer commercial sites with 5 to 10 MB for as little as $20/month. And many sites now offer trades from reciprocal links to banners to advertorials. Supported by advertisers who don’t mind a four-color banner on their e-mail, free stuff is becoming a trend. And hundreds of thousands all over the world hope for a payoff someday and in the meantime enjoy sharing their expertise.
Will it always be an inexpensive advertising medium? Probably! Two years ago when we started our first web project, we paid our ISP $400/month. Now we are paying a new ISP $25/month, and Juno, reportedly the fastest growing e-mail service on the web, is free!
What will keep it all together and interesting for the rest of us? Subject specific sites or niche marketing. Programs with information that the couch potato and business person can’t live without will be delivered by Web-TV and the like.
