MISSION STATEMENT

INTERVENTION, MENTORING AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURES MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The Bryan Foundation was formed in August 1992 with the belief that society needs to provide methods of rehabilitation, other than incarceration, and that "youth at risk" can be "turned around" when powerful alternative challenges are provided. The following intervention opportunities are designed to affect a turnaround before our kids become "lost in the system".

CHALLENGE OUTDOOR SPORTS is an approach to youth rehabilitation through recreation, that combines high adventure with the satisfaction of competitive problem solving. This type of program is known to have profound, long lasting effects on participants, leaving them with memories of accomplishment, capable of breaking the cycle of criminal behavior, poverty and despair.

These activities help set lifetime goals, while enhancing personal growth, assisting in the development of a positive self image. Also when using one's strengths and discovering one's weaknesses, while surrounded by peers, one develops strong coping skills in stressful situations.

ROCK CLIMBING/RAPPELING is guaranteed to build confidence and self esteem, as well as, a respect for nature. Not a moment goes by that the climbers are off duty. The risks are present at all times, but the rewards are unequaled in personal achievement and partner cooperation. Participants need no experience, and our facilitators provide all the safety equipment and instruction.

ROPES CHALLENGE is an obstacle course designed not only to challenge physically, but intellectually and emotionally. While promoting personal growth, participants will experience a new awareness in confidence, self-esteem and mastery, as they become involved in an adventure in team building. A series of ropes, logs and wire combinations called "elements", are designed to take both individuals and groups beyond their own expectations. It is through a series of attempts that groups come together and individuals come face to face with self. Just to make sure that this experience is an unforgettable one, and to provide additional opportunity for mentoring and camaraderie, we include other outdoor sports that are sure to get and keep the respect of our participants.

ORIENTEERING is a competitive form of survival, performed in teams on twenty acres with little more than a compass, protractor, and map. Each member learns skills for survival without a weapon.

MOUNTAIN BIKING is not for amateurs when it comes to excitement, especially when the ride occurs after a tough day of other mountain activities. Facilitators use this opportunity to encourage camaraderie and bonding within the group that serves as the "glue" in a "turnaround" experience.
