MICRO-YAHOO'S ARE-A-COMING!
1998 will be the year that niche Internet directories will begin to show their muscle. Mega-directories and search engines functioning as "be-all end-all" information services will become just that. End all!
Most search engines assume the users know what they are looking for, categorizing sites based on "yellow directory" type classifications. This means that eventually the Web and it's search tools become one big yellow directory with quick lookup capabilities, that is if you know what you are looking for in the first place. Not in your lifetime!
And when it comes to a small business getting a decent "placement" in the top 30 positions- recommended by most marketing gurus, forget it! Search Engines seem to be changing their "meta-tagging" rules about every six months.
Just to stay in the game, we run a full audit on our domains every 30 days. And still only receive about 25% of our visitors from search engines. 75% come to us from networking, i.e, linking.
What is the solution?
It is already in motion. A handful of companies such as ours (www.adfree.com) decided early on, that niche directories were the ultimate researchers answer, directories that limit their output to a limited number and type of entries. When the user peruses this type of directory they will get a variety of possible answers and hopefully some they were not even anticipating. This, by the way, is the essence of both research and networking-people with similar-but different interests talking to one another.
